In reality this\u00a0image was a small\u00a0technical step that created\u00a0a giant cultural leap.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">And so it is with\u00a0much of Improvement Science &#8211; the perception of the size of the challenge changes once the challenge is overcome. With the benefit of hindsight it was easy, even obvious &#8211; but with only the limit of foresight it looked difficult and\u00a0obscure.\u00a0\u00a0Our ability to\u00a0challenge, learn and adopt a new perspective is the source of much\u00a0gain and much pain. We gain the excitement of new understanding and we feel the pain of\u00a0being forced to face our\u00a0old ignorance.\u00a0 Many of us\u00a0deny ourselves\u00a0the gain because we cannot face the pain &#8211; but it does not have to be that way. We have a tendency to store the pain\u00a0up\u00a0until we are forced to face it &#8211; and by this means we create what feel like insurmountable barriers to improvement.\u00a0\u00a0There is an alternative &#8211; bite sized improvement &#8211; taking\u00a0small steps\u00a0towards a realistic goal that is on a path to\u00a0our distant objective.\u00a0 The small-step\u00a0method has many advantages &#8211;\u00a0we can do things that matter to us and are within our circle of influence; we can learn and practice the skills\u00a0in safety; and we can start immediately.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">In prospect it will\u00a0feel like a giant leap and in retrospect it will look like a small step &#8211;\u00a0that is the way of Improvement Science\u00a0&#8211; and\u00a0as our confidence and curiosity grow we take bigger steps and make smaller leaps.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This iconic image of Earthrise over the\u00a0Moonscape reveals the dynamic complexity\u00a0of the living\u00a0Earth contrasting starkly with the static simplicity of the\u00a0dead Moon.\u00a0The feeling\u00a0of fragility that this picture\u00a0evokes\u00a0sounds a warning\u00a0bell for us &#8211; &#8220;Death is Irreversible and Life is not Inevitable&#8221;.
