{"id":5555,"date":"2017-08-12T08:25:48","date_gmt":"2017-08-12T07:25:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.improvementscience.co.uk\/blog\/?p=5555"},"modified":"2017-08-12T08:25:48","modified_gmt":"2017-08-12T07:25:48","slug":"one-step-back-two-steps-forward","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hcse.blog\/?p=5555","title":{"rendered":"One Step Back; Two Steps Forward."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This week a ground-breaking case study was published.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.improvementscience.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/JOIS_2017_48.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5556\" src=\"http:\/\/www.improvementscience.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/JOIS_2017_48.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"936\" height=\"197\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It describes how a team in South Wales discovered how to make the flows visible in a critical part of their cancer pathway.<\/p>\n<p>Radiology.<\/p>\n<p>And they did that by unintentionally falling into a trap! \u00a0A trap that many who set out to improve health care services fall into. \u00a0But they did not give up. \u00a0They sought guidance and learned some profound lessons.<\/p>\n<p>Part 1 of their story is shared <a href=\"https:\/\/www.improvementscience.co.uk\/jois\/jois_view_abstract.php?volume=48\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>One lesson they learned is that, as they take on more complex improvement challenges, they need to be equipped with the right tools, and they need to be trained to use them, and they need to have practiced using them.<\/p>\n<p>Another lesson they learned is that making the flows in a system visible is necessary <strong>before<\/strong> the current behaviour of the system can be understood.<\/p>\n<p>And they learned that they needed a clear diagnosis of <strong>how<\/strong> the current system is <strong>not<\/strong> performing; before they can attempt to design an intervention to deliver the intended improvement.<\/p>\n<p>They learned how the <strong>Study-Plan-Do<\/strong> cycle works, and they learned the reason it starts with &#8220;Study&#8221;, and not with &#8220;Plan&#8221;.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>They tried, failed, took one step back, asked, listened and learned.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Then with their new knowledge, more advanced tools, and deeper understanding they took two steps forward; diagnosed problem, designed an intervention, and delivered a significant improvement.<\/p>\n<p>And visualised just how significant.<\/p>\n<p>Then they shared Part 2 of their story &#8230;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.improvementscience.co.uk\/jois\/jois_view_abstract.php?volume=49\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.improvementscience.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/JOIS_2017_49.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5557\" src=\"http:\/\/www.improvementscience.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/JOIS_2017_49.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1031\" height=\"193\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This week a ground-breaking case study was published.
