{"id":519,"date":"2010-10-30T11:12:43","date_gmt":"2010-10-30T11:12:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.saasoft.com\/blog\/?p=519"},"modified":"2010-10-30T11:12:43","modified_gmt":"2010-10-30T11:12:43","slug":"must-we-unlearn-first","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hcse.blog\/?p=519","title":{"rendered":"Must We Unlearn First?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.improvementscience.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/masteryoda.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-520\" title=\"masteryoda\" src=\"http:\/\/www.improvementscience.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/masteryoda.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"277\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hcse.blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/masteryoda.jpg 277w, https:\/\/hcse.blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/masteryoda-231x300.jpg 231w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 277px) 100vw, 277px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In the famous &#8220;Star Wars&#8221; films when Luke Skywalker is learning to master the Force\u00a0&#8211; his\u00a0trainer,\u00a0Jedi Master Yoda, says the famous line:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em>You must unlearn what you have learned<\/em>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<p>These seven words capture a fundamental principle of Improvement Science &#8211; that very often we have to unlearn before we can improve.<\/p>\n<p>Unlearning is not the same as forgetting &#8211; because much of what we have learned is unconscious &#8211; so to unlearn\u00a0we first have to make\u00a0our assumptions\u00a0conscious.<\/p>\n<p>Unlearning is not\u00a0just erasing a memory, it is preparing the mental ground to\u00a0replace the\u00a0learning with something else.<\/p>\n<p>And we do not want to unlearn everything &#8211;\u00a0we want to keep\u00a0the nexus of knowledge nuggets that form the solid foundation of new learning.\u00a0 We only want to unlearn what\u00a0is preventing us adding new\u00a0understanding, concepts and skills\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0the invisible layer of psychological grease that smears our vision and leaves\u00a0our\u00a0minds slippery and unable to grasp new concepts.<\/p>\n<p>We need\u00a0to apply some cognitive detergent and ad some heated debate to strip off the psycho-slime.\u00a0 The best detergent is I have found is\u00a0called Reality and\u00a0the good news is that\u00a0Reality\u00a0is widely available,\u00a0completely free and supplies will never run out.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"You Tube\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=1M6MS-qBgqg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Watch the video on YouTube<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In the famous &#8220;Star Wars&#8221; films when Luke Skywalker is learning to master the Force\u00a0&#8211; his\u00a0trainer,\u00a0Jedi Master Yoda, says the famous line: &#8220;You must unlearn what you have learned&#8220;.
