The focused concentration is palpable. It is a tough design assignment &#8230; a chronically chaotic one-stop outpatient clinic. They know it well.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">They have the raw, unprocessed, data and they are deep into diagnosis mode. \u00a0On the other side of the room is another team of consultant surgeon volunteers who are struggling with the same challenge. Competition is in the air. Reputations are on the line. The game is on.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.improvementscience.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/20160907_120911.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4858\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-4858 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.improvementscience.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/20160907_120911-300x169.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hcse.blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/20160907_120911-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/hcse.blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/20160907_120911-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/hcse.blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/20160907_120911-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/hcse.blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/20160907_120911.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>They are racing to generate this &#8230; a process template chart &#8230; that illustrates the conversion of raw event data into something visible and meaningful. A Gantt chart.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Their tools are basic &#8211; coloured pens and squared paper &#8211; just as Henry L. Gantt used in 1916 &#8211; a hundred years ago.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Hidden in this Gantt chart is the diagnosis, the open door to the path to improving this clinic design. \u00a0It is as plain as the nose on your face &#8230; if you know what to look for. They don&#8217;t. Well, &#8230; not yet.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.improvementscience.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/20160907_151016.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4859\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-4859 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.improvementscience.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/20160907_151016-300x169.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hcse.blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/20160907_151016-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/hcse.blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/20160907_151016-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/hcse.blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/20160907_151016-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/hcse.blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/20160907_151016.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Skip forwards to later in the experiment. Both teams have solved the &#8216;impossible&#8217; problem. They have diagnosed the system design flaw that was causing the queues, chaos and waiting &#8230; and they have designed and verified a solution. With no more than squared paper and coloured pens. \u00a0Henry G would be delighted.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">And they are justifiably proud of their achievement because, when they tested their design in the real world, it showed that the queues and chaos had &#8220;evaporated&#8221;. \u00a0And it cost &#8230; nothing.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">At the start of the experiment they were unaware of what was possible.
