It depends on our perspective. If\u00a0we always get what we\u00a0expect then we could\u00a0conclude that\u00a0we have succeeded &#8211; yet\u00a0we have\u00a0neither\u00a0learned\u00a0anything nor improved. So have we failed to learn?\u00a0In contrast, if\u00a0we never get what\u00a0we expected then\u00a0we could\u00a0conclude that\u00a0we\u00a0\u00a0always fail &#8211; yet\u00a0we do not report\u00a0what we have\u00a0learned and\u00a0improved.\u00a0 Our expectation might be too high! So\u00a0comparing outcome with expectation seems a poor way\u00a0to\u00a0measure\u00a0our progress with\u00a0learning\u00a0and improvement.<\/p>\n<p>When we try something new we should\u00a0expect to be surprised &#8211; otherwise it would not be new.\u00a0 It is what we learn from that expected surprise that is of most value. Sometime life turns out\u00a0better than we expected &#8211; what can we learn from those experiences and how can\u00a0we ensure\u00a0that outcome\u00a0happens again &#8211; predictably? Sometimes life\u00a0turns out worse than we expected &#8211; what can we learn from those experiences and how can we ensure that outcome\u00a0does not happen again, predictably?\u00a0 So, yes it\u00a0is OK for us to fail and to not\u00a0get what we expected &#8211; first time.\u00a0 What is not OK is for us to fail to learn from\u00a0the lesson and\u00a0to make an avoidable mistake more than once or miss an opportunity for improvement more than once.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Improvement Science is about learning from when what actually happens is\u00a0different to that which we expected to happen.\u00a0 Is this surprise a failure or is this a success?
