{"id":1143,"date":"2011-11-19T19:22:02","date_gmt":"2011-11-19T19:22:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.saasoft.com\/blog\/?p=1143"},"modified":"2011-11-19T19:22:02","modified_gmt":"2011-11-19T19:22:02","slug":"fish-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hcse.blog\/?p=1143","title":{"rendered":"FISH"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.improvementscience.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Fish.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1144\" title=\"Fish\" src=\"http:\/\/www.improvementscience.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Fish.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"210\" height=\"83\" \/><\/a>Several years ago I read an inspirational\u00a0book called <em>Fish!<\/em>\u00a0which recounts the tale of a manager who is given the task of &#8220;sorting out&#8221; the worst department in\u00a0her organisation\u00a0&#8211; a department that everyone hated to deal with and that everyone hated to work in. The nickname was The Toxic Energy Dump.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The story\u00a0retells how, by chance, she\u00a0stumbled across\u00a0help in the unlikeliest of\u00a0places &#8211; the Pike Place fish market in Seattle.\u00a0 There she learned four\u00a0principles that transformed her department and her\u00a0worklife:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">1. Work Made Fun Gets Done<br \/>\n2. Make Someone&#8217;s Day<br \/>\n3. Be\u00a0Fully Present<br \/>\n4. Choose Your Attitude<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u00a0The take home lesson from <em>Fish!<\/em> is that we make our work miserable by the way we behave towards each other.\u00a0\u00a0 So\u00a0if we are unhappy at work and we do nothing about our behaviour then\u00a0our misery will continue.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">This means we\u00a0can choose to\u00a0make work\u00a0enjoyable &#8211; and it is the responsibility of leaders at all levels to create the context for this to happen.\u00a0 Miserable staff\u00a0= poor leadership.\u00a0 And leadership starts with the leader.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<li>Effective leadership is\u00a0inspiring\u00a0others to achieve through example.<\/li>\n<li>Leadership\u00a0does not work\u00a0without trust.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Play is more than an activity &#8211; it is\u00a0creative energy &#8211; and\u00a0requires\u00a0a culture\u00a0of trust not a culture of fear.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>To make someone\u2019s day all you need to so is\u00a0show them how much you appreciate them.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>The attitude and behaviour of\u00a0a leader has a powerful effect on those\u00a0that\u00a0they\u00a0lead.<\/li>\n<li>Effective leaders know what they stand for and ask others to hold them to account.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">FISH has another meaning &#8211; it stands for <em>Foundations of Improvement Science for Health<\/em> &#8211; and it is the core set\u00a0of\u00a0skills needed to create a SELF &#8211; a <em>Safe Environment for Learning and Fun<\/em>.\u00a0 The necessary context for culture change. It is more than that though &#8211; FISH also includes the skills to\u00a0design more productive processes\u00a0&#8211; releasing valuable lifetime and energy to invest in creative fun.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Fish are immersed in their\u00a0environment\u00a0&#8211; and so are people. We learn by immersion in reality. Rhetoric &#8211; be it\u00a0thinking,\u00a0talking\u00a0or writing &#8211; is a much less effective teacher.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">So all we have to do is\u00a0co-create\u00a0a context for improvement and then\u00a0immerse ourselves in it. The improvement\u00a0that results is an inevitable consequence of th design.
