{"id":1053,"date":"2011-10-01T17:25:06","date_gmt":"2011-10-01T17:25:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.saasoft.com\/blog\/?p=1053"},"modified":"2011-10-01T17:25:06","modified_gmt":"2011-10-01T17:25:06","slug":"argument-free-problem-solving","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hcse.blog\/?p=1053","title":{"rendered":"Argument-Free-Problem-Solving"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.improvementscience.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Problem_Solving.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1054\" title=\"Problem_Solving\" src=\"http:\/\/www.improvementscience.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Problem_Solving.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"230\" height=\"202\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I used to be puzzled when I\u00a0reflected on the observation that we\u00a0seem to be able to solve problems as individuals much more quickly and with\u00a0greater certainty than we could\u00a0as\u00a0groups.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I used to\u00a0believe\u00a0that having many\u00a0different perspectives of a problem would be an asset &#8211;\u00a0but in reality it seems to be more of a liability.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Now when I receive\u00a0an invitation\u00a0to a meeting to discuss an issue of urgent importance my\u00a0little heart sinks as I recall the endless hours of my limited life-time wasted in worthless, unproductive discussion.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">But,\u00a0not to be one to wallow in despair I have been busy applying the principles of Improvement Science to this\u00a0ubiquitous and persistent\u00a0niggle.\u00a0 And I have discovered\u00a0something called Argument Free Problem Solving (AFPS) &#8211; or rather\u00a0that is my name for it because\u00a0it <em>does what it says on the tin<\/em> &#8211; it solves problems without arguments.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The\u00a0trick was to treat problem-solving as a process; to understand how we solve problems as individuals; what are the worthwhile bits; and how we scupper the process when we add-in more than one person; and then how to design-to-align the\u00a0 problem-solving workflow so that it\u00a0&#8230;. flows. So that it is effective and efficient.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The result\u00a0is AFPS and I&#8217;ve been testing it out. Wow! Does it work or what!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I have also discovered that\u00a0we do not need to create an artificial set of Rules or a Special Jargon &#8211;\u00a0we can \u00a0apply the\u00a0recipe to any situation in a very natural\u00a0and unobtrusive way.\u00a0 Just this week I have seen\u00a0it\u00a0work like magic\u00a0several times: once in defusing what was looking like a\u00a0big bust up looming; once t0 resolve a small niggle that had been magnified into a huge monster and a big battle &#8211; the smoke of which\u00a0was obscuring the real win-win-win opportunity; and once in a\u00a0collaborative process improvement\u00a0exercise that demonstrated a\u00a02000% improvement in system productivity &#8211;\u00a0yes &#8211; two <strong>thousand<\/strong> percent!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">So AFPS\u00a0 has been added to the\u00a0\u00a0Improvement Science treasure chest and (because I like to tease and have fun) I have hidden the key\u00a0in cyberspace at coordinates \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.saasoft.com\/moodle\">http:\/\/www.saasoft.com\/moodle<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Mwah ha ha ha &#8211; me hearties!\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I used to be puzzled when I\u00a0reflected on the observation that we\u00a0seem to be able to solve problems as individuals much more quickly and with\u00a0greater certainty than we could\u00a0as\u00a0groups.
